FAMILY CAREGIVER BOOTCAMP

Now take a deep breath and exhale.  After being in home care for over 15 years, Nurse Michele is here to assist you. She was a Home Attendant and Certified Nurses Aide before becoming a Registered Nurse. She has taught the home health aide state certification course for NY state. You are definitely in good hands. 

​In this bootcamp, Nurse Michele will give you (the family caregiver) a "crash course" on how to care for your aging family member. To be clear, this bootcamp is NOT a state home attendant certification course. This course is here to make you (the family caregiver) more comfortable in assisting with the care of your loved one, boost your confidence, and give you a few basic skills for your caregiver "tool-belt"  that you will likely use on a daily basis. Honestly, being a caregiver is something you mostly learn while on-the-job and this bootcamp gives you a solid foundation to build on. Even if you know you won't be doing any hands-on care for your loved one,  this class gives you the information needed so you are aware how your home attendant will care for them. You want to make sure they are providing appropriate and safe care for your loved ones. You will leave the class feeling empowered and will wear your Caregiver badge proudly. ​

Topics To Be Covered (include but not limited to)
  • Various medical equipment for the home
  • Nutrition--different types of diets
  • ​Balance and walking devices(ex: cane, walker, wheelchair use)​
  • Ways to decrease fall accidents in the home
  • Places to live
  • Dealing with home care services and home attendants​
  • Advance Care Planning--getting our affairs in order (living wills, healthcare proxy, power of attorney)
  • Discussing strategy for your specific situation to help keep your loved one home safely

The Bootcamp is a live class (in-person or virtually via Zoom). Nurse Michele will demonstrate basic skills and provide visual props throughout the class. This will allow you to become more comfortable and ask any questions as the various  tasks are being completed. A pre-recorded video course cannot provide that. Bootcamp is a judgement free zone. Remember there is no such thing as a "dumb question".  If something doesn't make sense to you this is the time to ask any questions. You will leave the bootcamp with a workbook covering the topics we discussed that day so you have something to reference back to later.
Bootcamps can be arranged for during the week or weekends and is generally 3 hours in length depending on class size. You can arrange to have the Family Caregiver Bootcamp as one-on-one or with a group of your family members.
