Have you thought about bringing mom/dad to live with you, but are hesitant because you're not confident you can handle caring for them?
Have you brought your aging senior home to live with you and now you don't know how to care for them like you thought you could?
Do you have a home attendant helping with your loved one's care, but are you are responsible for their care after the home attendant leaves and you're not quite sure what to do?
Has your loved one's health declined that they now need more hands-on assistance from you with their care?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions then don't worry. You are not alone in your feelings and thoughts. Now take a deep breath and exhale. After being in home care for over 10 years, I am here to assist you. I was a nurses aide before becoming a registered nurse and I have taught the home health aide state certification course for NY. You are definitely in good hands. I will teach you some of what I've learned through the years. In this bootcamp, I will give you (the family caregiver) a "crash course" on how to care for your aging family member. To be clear, this bootcamp is NOT a state home attendant certification course. This course is here to make you(the family caregiver) more comfortable in assisting with the care of your loved one, boost your confidence, and give you a few basic skills for your caregiver "tool-belt" that you will likely use on a daily basis. Honestly, being a caregiver is something you mostly learn while on-the-job and this bootcamp gives you a firm foundation to build on. Even if you know you won't be doing any hands-on care for your loved one, this class gives you the information needed so you are aware how your home attendant will care for them. We want to make sure they are providing appropriate and safe care for your loved ones. You will leave the class feeling empowered and will wear your Caregiver badge proudly.
Topics To Be Covered (include but not limited to)
Nutrition--different types of diets
Bathing and dressing
Using a toilet and how to put on adult diapers
Walking with and without devices(ex: cane, walker, wheelchair use)
Getting in/out of bed
Making a bed (when someone is in it)
How to decrease fall accidents in the home
Dealing with home care services and home attendants
Advance Care Planning--getting our affairs in order (living wills, healthcare proxy, power of attorney)
The Bootcamp is a live class given online. I conduct the class via a video call platform called Zoom. I can see/hear you and you can see/hear me. I will demonstrate basic skills throughout the class. This will allow you to become more comfortable and ask any questions as we're completing the various tasks. A pre-recorded video course cannot provide that. This a judgement free zone. Remember there is no such thing as a "dumb question". If something doesn't make sense to you this is the time to ask any questions. If I demonstrate a technique and you don't quite understand how I performed that task just let me know and I will do it again for you. You will leave the bootcamp with a e-workbook covering the topics we discussed that day so you have something to reference back to later. Bootcamps can be arranged for weekdays or weekends(based on availability). Since class is online you can have a class for just you or the entire family (no matter anyone's location). Class is generally 3-4 hours in length depending on class size. Contact me to register for your family for the Family Caregiver Bootcamp below. If you have any specific questions please contact me. My home set-up
I I am based in Queens, NY. I teach the Bootcamp from my home set up. Sometimes I am able to host small classes of up to 5 people in my home for those families that want to have a more hands-on experience. If interested in that please email me and we can discuss further.
